Health & Safety at Heartwood Tree Technicians

At Heartwood Tree Technicians, health and safety is central to the way we plan and carry out our work. Tree surgery and arboriculture involve significant risks, from chainsaw operations and working at height to falling timber, machinery and changing site conditions.

We take a planned, professional approach to managing these risks and protecting our workforce, customers and members of the public.

CHAS SSIP Approved Contractor

Heartwood Tree Technicians is a CHAS SSIP Approved Contractor.

CHAS is a recognised health and safety assessment scheme and a founding member of Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP). Its assessment process provides a recognised way for contractors to demonstrate that their health and safety management arrangements have been assessed against the SSIP Core Criteria.

For our customers, this provides additional assurance when selecting a contractor for tree work, forestry or site clearance. It is particularly relevant to commercial clients, property managers and organisations that require evidence of health and safety competence as part of their procurement process.

You can find out more about the scheme at CHAS.co.uk.

Planning and Managing Tree Work Safely

Every site presents different challenges. Before work begins, the nature of the job, the surrounding environment and the potential hazards need to be considered. Appropriate planning and risk assessment helps us to identify suitable working methods and the precautions required.

Depending on the project, this may include managing exclusion zones, protecting nearby property, considering public access, assessing ground conditions and planning for emergency situations.

Where work takes place near roads, buildings, overhead services or areas used by the public, these additional considerations form part of the planning process.

Training, Competence and Equipment

Tree work requires appropriate training, experience and competence for the tasks being undertaken. Our tree work qualifications include those awarded through the National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC), these can be seen in the below gallery of accreditations.

We recognise the importance of suitable equipment, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining tools and machinery in a safe working condition. The equipment and working methods used are selected according to the task and the risks involved.

Protecting People and the Environment

We aim to carry out work with consideration for our customers, the public, neighbouring properties and the surrounding environment. This includes planning access, managing work areas and considering relevant wildlife and environmental requirements.

Our approach is informed by the Health and Safety Executive's guidance for forestry and arboriculture, including safe working practices for chainsaw operations, working at height and site management.
